The University Sport South Africa XI cruised to a six-wicket triumph over the South Africa Emerging side in the final of the Cricket South Africa (CSA) Tri-Series at Tuks Oval on Wednesday. Man of the Match, Thomas Kaber (3/30, 35* off 45) and Keith Dudgeon (3/41) shared six wickets between them to bundle the Emerging side out for 218/9 (50 overs) after the latter elected to bat first. Wickets falling in clumps was the side’s biggest killer. They lost Karabo Mogotsi (0) and Leus du Plooy (13) in the first six overs, followed by Sibonelo Makhanya (17) in the 18th, leaving the home side on 65/3. Man of the Series, Jason Smith (50) and captain, Marques Ackerman (50) put on a 71-run, fourth-wicket stand to move their side out of danger and onto the path to a more respectable total in the end. Dayyaan Galiem returned unbeaten for 34 off 38 deliveries and Delano Potgieter added 2/28 to the wickets margin.
USSA’s reply got off to a sturdy start as Yassar Cook (60) and Janneman Malan (8) opened the innings with a 31-run partnership off 29 deliveries before Vincent Moore (1/40) struck. Cook soldiered on, sharing a 66-run stand for the second wicket with Matthew Christensen (26), but it was the unbeaten 100-run partnership between USSA captain, Wihan Lubbe, who hit 64 at a run a ball and Kaber that saw the side sail to an unequivocal win in the end.
