The F1 aero trick Red Bull stole a march with – before it was banned

There were many factors behind Red Bull’s dominance with Sebastian Vettel that led to four consecutive world championships from 2010-13. But one key area it was always able to maximise better than its rivals was in the use of exhaust gases for aerodynamic benefit. Jake Boxall-Legge and Giorgio Piola revisit some of the ways Adrian Newey came up with to exploit exhaust blowing, and how the rulemakers kept trying to peg the idea back.
